Authentic Syrian Hummus
TGIF everyone!!!!!! I am soooooooo glad that it is the weekend!! Today I am going to share with you my family recipe for hummus. My Dad’s side of the family is Syrian, so you can trust that I know what I am talking about when it comes to Middle Eastern Food!
I know that hummus has become a bit of a craze lately, and all the hype is right. It is pretty healthy, and really delicious! But, there are a couple of things that annoy me about the craze. Firstly, everyone pronounces it “hum-mis”, and this is totally wrong! It really should be pronounced “hom-mous”!! The next thing, is all of the pre-packaged, preservative filled, hummus that has popped up in our grocery stores. It tastes totally fake, and is not really authentic at all! I feel like nobody knows what real hummus really tastes like!
Well…. I am here to give you the sitch on hummus! I think that once you try this authentic and fresh recipe you too will never be able to eat the pre-made hummus in the stores again either. It is so easy to make, and all of the ingredients are real food and natural. No preservatives or chemicals! And… its just way more scrumptious! Please give it a try, and let me know what you think! :-)
Authentic Syrian Hummus
This delicious hummus recipe is authentic just like my Sitto used to make! It is very easy and also healthy and it is sure to be a crowd pleaser at any gathering!
Ingredients
- 15 oz can of garbanzo beans, drain 3/4 of the liquid in the can but save the rest
- 1/3 cup lemon juice, fresh works best
- 4 Tbsp tahini (sesame paste)
- 3 cloves of garlic, lightly chopped
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp ground cumin
Instructions
Combine all of the ingredients in a food processor until they are smooth.
Enjoy! To make this hummus extra fancy garnish with a little bit of extra
virgin olive oil, some pine nuts, and some paprika like I did! Beautiful!
Notes
The ingredient quantities are more like guidelines for this recipe... you really have to taste it and adjust it to what you like. If you like it more garlicky add more garlic, if you like it less lemony, decrease the lemon, etc.

I didn’t know you were part Syrian. I have many Syrian friends and in fact, my bff is married to a Syrian. I love their food, but I love all ME food and especially hummus! I grew up eating this stuff and I think it runs in my veins!
Sarah, yours looks perfect! Wish I had some warm pita to scoop up some.

To make it even better, use dried chickpeas instead of canned. The canned ones always have an odd aftertaste, especially when you add the liquid from the can, and preparing dried ones is not difficult. I made hummous with well-rinsed canned chickpeas for years, but once I tried using dried ones cooked myself, now I only ever used canned ones in an emergency. I also like to cream the lemon juice, salt, and tahini first, then add the chickpeas. I find it makes for a better texture. Lastly, I add the garlic at the very end before the final blitzing in the food processor. If you add the garlic too early, the flavour changes, albeit subtly.

I will have to try that!!

I made this homemade hummus last weekend and it was gone as soon as I put it on the table. The flavors were absolutely perfect. Can’t wait to make again.

What is the conversion for fresh garbanzo beans? Thanks
Sarah
I have never used fresh to be honest, so I’m not sure. If you find out do let me know!
